| “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ broke Hong Kong’s opening-day box-office record, following similar feats in the U.S. and other overseas markets. The latest installment of the long-running series earned 6.4 million Hong Kong dollars (US$815,600) on its Thursday opening day, according to Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.’s Hong Kong office. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which opened late June, was the previous record-holder, bringing in HK$6 million. That summer blockbuster, however, held onto to the city’s full-weekend record because of a long holiday weekend that included Hong Kong’s Handover Day, pulling in HK$42.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo. “Deathly Hallows Part 2″ brought in HK$28.2 million last weekend. Movie theaters around the region and the rest of the world were stuffed to capacity as fans of all ages went back to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for one final showdown. Hong Kong theaters devoted multiple screens to the film, with some, like the Palace apm cinema, selling tickets to more than 20 showings a day in 3-D, 2-D, English and Chinese versions. Harry Potter also broke the U.S. record for earnings in a single day, taking in $92.1 million Friday and surpassing the previous record set in 2009 by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Warner Bros. estimated that “Deathly Hallows Part 2,” which wrapped up a 10-year, eight-film franchise, earned more than $475 million world-wide last weekend. It was the first ─ and as the series finale, the last ─ Potter film to be released in 3-D, whose higher ticket prices boosted the box-office haul. Asia box-office watchers are staying tuned: The film is slated to open next month in mainland China. |
