3. Presentation
In language, logical combinations are important – at the level of words, sentences and ideas. We call these devices ‘connectors’, and they greatly assist in the coherence and cohesion of spoken or written language.
Look at the ways in which we can use connectors:
3.1 To signal time relationships
For example:
First of all money was prime motivating factor for me.
Well, next and certainly on a par with money was recognition.
3.2 To signal logical relationships
(a) Cause
therefore so accordingly consequently as a consequence/result hence(formal) thus(formal) because of this that’s why(informal)
For example:
Therefore, if I follow your arguments, you’d put recognition as high as money?
(b) Contrast
yet however nevertheless still but even so all the same(informal)
For example:
However, needs change.
(c) Condition
then in that case
For example:
And if the answer was yes, then I took steps to get it – either by persuading my boss that I was worth more or by moving on.
(d) Contradiction
in fact actually as a matter of fact
For example:
Though, in fact I’d say that I’ve been both lucky and happy.
3.3 To signal textual relationships
(a) Addition
also in addition moreover furthermore besides too as well as what’s more(informal)
For example:
And presumably also what you get enjoyment from.
(b) Summary
to sum up then overall in brief/short
For example:
In brief, that is what I went for.
(c) Equivalence
in other words that means namely that is to say or rather
For example:
In other words, were others truly valuing me for my efforts?
(d) Inclusion
for example for instance say(informal) such as as follows (written)
e.g.(formal and written)
For example:
Things I’d always dabbled with but never quite managed to master, like a four iron, for example, or a good novel.
(e) Highlight
in particular in detail especially notably chiefly mainly
For example:
Well, during my working life there are certain questions that I’ve asked myself, mainly when I’ve felt dissatisfied.
(f) Generalisation
usually/normally as rule in general for the most part in most cases on the whole
For example:
In general, others guys take it for granted that you take two weeks out to recharge your batteries.

Obviously, Chaplin’s mother wasn’t born with a natural aptitude for singing. She was led by poverty into making an ill-advised decision of being a singer. Under the high pressures of life, she carried on her profession. She had never been well valued, neither had she won any recognition. She was satisfied neither with her voice nor with the music. But she could do nothing. She often carried the can for others. She knew she wasn’t good at singing. She was booed out of the stage one day. She lost the chance to bow gracefully out of her career. The 12-year-old Chaplin jumped onto the stage for his mother. He started singing and dancing which overwhelmed the audience. Gradually Chaplin got the esteems that he deserved. In fact, the motivating factor of his performance was the love for his mother. Later he discovered that he enjoyed performing on the stage.

It seems that the president thrives on the job. Others value him for his efforts, too. Certainly, he does not take the challenge just for the sake of a challenge. He takes recognition on a par with his contentment with his job. His self-knowledge comes from his experience. We all think he was born with a natural aptitude for management. He was very serious on choosing a right life-path while he was young. When life does not get on well with work, he redresses the balance. Although he is very busy, he still tries to find time for self-examination. He seldom blames others, but often carries the can for them. “It’s all my fault” is what he always says. We share the same philosophy both on the job and off it. And it works like magic.[/color]

Focus:Management philosophies and the work plan
1. Management themes
Sahito is a world leader in consumer electronics. The following extract is from a newspaper interview about the company and its remarkable Chief Executive Officer, Akito Tanaya.
Business World:
Sahito has been built up into the most powerful electronics giant in the world. You’ve been at the helm now for 25 years, moulding its growth and now presiding over the company’s vast empire. What are the secrets of its success?
Akito Tanya:
I believe that we derive our strength from the unique relationship that we have been able to develop with our workers.
BW:
So, what is the basis of the philosophy that has built up this remarkable empire?
AT:
When I was a college student learning business administration, I took a course in psychology. And one of the components of the course was theories of motivation. That’s where I drew my inspiration from.
BW:
So, is there a specific theory on which you base your philosophy?
AT:
Yes, it’s called MacGregor’s Theories. He proposed that there are two different sets of assumptions about what motivates people, which he called theory X and Theory Y. Theory X is a pretty gloomy view of human nature, while Theory Y is a more optimistic view. In brief, Theory X states that the average human has an inherent dislike of work, will avoid it if he can and will avoid responsibility at all costs. Because of their dislike of work, most people must be coerced, controlled, directed and threatened with punishment to get them to make any effort at work.
BW:
So, from our earlier conversation, I suppose you subscribe to the other theory?
AT:
Exactly. Theory Y is the sunny, optimistic view of people and the one which, in my opinion, best characterises human nature. At least for a substantial majority of the population. In short, Theory
Y states that most people will devote their energies to work, just as they do to play, as long as certain conditions are met. Firstly, they need set objectives and rewards for achieving the,; secondly, they need responsibility; and thirdly, they need oppportunities to apply their imagination, creativity and ingenuity to solve organisational problems. So, under the right circumstances, people want to work, are eager to work, derive satisfaction from work, and are good at work.
1.1 Discussion
The text presents two theories of human nature: Theory X, which states that most people are work-shy and Theory Y, which states that most people are motivated to work given the right conditions.
Firstly, which theory do you subscribe to? Secondly, which theory reflects the views of the management in your organisation?
2. Listening
Peter Harrington has been voted the Young Entrepreneur of the Year. His company, PH Industries, produces a new generation of voice-activated computers (VACs). In this interview he talks about his work with Samantha Evans, a reporter from Business World.
As you listen fill in the activities in Peter’s planner.
Listening Task
S: Peter, you’ve been voted Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Now, what does this mean to you?
P: Well, obviously I’m very pleased that the work we’re doing here at PH Industries is getting recognition. And I’m pleased not only for myself, but also for everyone here who’s mode it possible. But I don't want this award to distract me from my purpose here, which is to make PH a major player in the VACs market.
S: PH has taken off in a big way. Where is it leading to?
P: Well, if I look into my diary for the next week, we can get on idea of where the interest in VACs lies. On Monday morning, I’ll be looking over our new production site at Hinton. In fact, we needed to move in earlier than planned because demand has been higher than expected. So, we’ve had to speed up every aspect of the operation. One thing I’ve learned over the last three years is that you never make up lost time.
S: So, have you closed down the old plant totally now?
P: Yes, every thing is up and running at Hinton. So, after Hinton I’ve got a meeting in Paris with our French team. We need to tie up a deal for the distribution of the VAC2000, which is becoming a business-standard model for many big names.
S: So the VAC2000 is making its mark in France?
P: Oh, yes, and faster than I expected. Of course, that’s part of the reason for the pressure to get Hinton up and running. So, once I’ve found out the scale of the immediate French needs, I’m moving on to Zurich for and afternoon meeting with a major software manufacturer.
A: Ah, would that be Visitech?
P: You’ll find that out very soon! Maybe even next week. But there are still some points to iron out. Um, so, that takes care of Monday.
S: A full day?
P: Well, let’s say a typical day. From Zurich I’m going on to Budapest on Tuesday. There are some
very exciting opportunities in Eastem Europe at the moment.
S: Our information is that the market situation is quite stagnant at present.
P: Well, Rome wasn’t built in a day. We have to take a medium-term view and look at where they are going to be five years from now. the potential is enormous. My job is to make sure that we’re there when the barriers are truly broken down. At the moment, I am talking them round to our way of thinking and way of working. The rest will happen when the time is right.
S: So, is Hungary your only are of interest in East Europe?
P: No, not at all. In fact, after Tuesday morning in Budapest, I’m going to Prague, where we already have the seeds of a very successful joint venture. We’re planning to open up a major production centre in the north of the Czech republic. It’ll be funded partly by us and partly by a new East Europe Technology Development Fund.
S: That sounds very exciting.
P: Yes. On Monday and Tuesday I’ll be sowing the seeds for the European operations of PH Industries.
S: And Wednesday?
P: Wednesday, I’m back in Hinton for a series of internal meetings. I’ve brought forward our monthly marketing meeting, because of the unexpected sales increases. So, I’ll be looking over the figures with the marketing team during the morning. And in the afternoon, there is a series of technical meetings to look into the successor to the VAC2500. in fact I only put in a taken appearance at technical meetings because that’s not my forte. Oh yes, in between I have a lunch invitation in London to address the Anglo-Danish Chamber of Commerce on European Technical Integration.
S: Is that as a result of the new political Europe?
P: No, not really, it’s just a coincidence. Thursday I’m spending here. From my diary I see that my secretary has set up two meetings for me with visitors from European technologists: one from Germany and the other from Japan. I’m looking froward to that; that should be quite interesting. And between the meetings I have to catch up on matters here in Hinton.
S: And Friday?
P: As a rule I keep Friday free to deal with matters that need attention here. With the business moving so quickly, I don’t like to take myself away from base more than necessary. And I like to give everyone here an opportunity to talk to me about developments on a regular basis. You se, I’m convinced that we’ve got the winning
team here and I want to make sure that it stays that way.
BW=商业世界AT=Akito Tanaya
